The iPhone 12 replaces the stock iPhone 11. It features a 6.1-inch OLED display and supports 5G networks using Apple’s Super Retina XDR technology.
iPhone 12 Features
iPhone 12 – 128GB first-generation iPhone with OLED screens on all models. The display features Apple’s Super Retina XDR technology with a 2-million-to-one contrast ratio, enhanced HDR, and true blacks. This display has a resolution of 460 ppi and can display HDR content up to 1200 nits. Apple says it’s the most durable iPhone display ever made. It features a new ceramic shield that improves drop durability. The thermal crystallization process used to increase the strength of the glass provides up to 4x more drop protection than previous models. The 6.1-inch display size isn’t new to the base model, but flat bezels and an improved design result in a better screen-to-body ratio.
Rear Camera
The rear camera setup is the same as the iPhone 11. There are two 12MP rear cameras. One is wide-angle and the other is ultra-wide. The layout is identical to the iPhone 11, but it has a larger sensor and both lenses have a wider aperture. The wide-angle camera is f/1
6, better than the iPhone 11’s f/1.8 aperture. This allows 27% more light for better photos and videos in low light conditions. Computational photography is greatly improved thanks to the A14 Bionic processor. Deep Fusion and night mode work on all cameras, including the front-facing selfie camera. Smart HDR 3 uses machine learning to adjust the white balance, contrast, texture and saturation of every photo. iPhone 12 can shoot HDR video with Dolby Vision classification.
A14 Bionic processor is a custom Apple Silicon processor using the 5nm process. It features a CPU and GPU that are 50% faster than smartphone chips from other manufacturers and has over 11.8 billion transistors. The Neural Engine features a 16-core processor that is 80% faster than the A13 Bionic. It does over 11 trillion operations per second. The Neural Engine is responsible for everything from machine learning to photography when using the iPhone
Wireless connectivity
5G wireless brings a new level of performance to streaming, gaming and workflow. All new iPhone 12 models will use 5G and support mmWave bands in the US.
Apple built the iPhone 12 chassis with custom 5G antennas and supported more 5G bands than any other smartphone. The iOS framework was built from the ground up to work with 5G for maximum optimization. Verizon 5G Ultra-Broadband provides 4 Gbps downloads and 200 Mbps uploads under ideal conditions. By the end of the year, the network will cover 60 cities. Verizon’s standard 5G network has also been launched, giving iPhone 12 buyers a widely available network at launch.
Size and weight compared to the iPhone 11
Apple has slightly reduced the size of the new model. On the iPhone 12, the device will be smaller and lighter with the same display size. Compared to iPhone 11, iPhone 12 is 2.7% shorter, 5.4% narrower and 12% thinner than iPhone 11. Additionally, the new model is 15.5% lighter than the previous model.
